| CURITIBA, Brazil – The warden of a jail in southern Brazil has been dismissed after photos surfaced showing inmates having a party. Brazil is not known for according jail inmates luxuries, so the photos, taken in Bandeirantes jail in northern Parana state, which show inmates living it up in an inflatable pool with beer, barbeque, cellphones and tobacco has caused public outrage.
The images, recorded in December 2011, show prisoners who were convicted of crimes such as murder, robbery and drug trafficking partying it up in the day room at the jail. Guards at the prison claim to have no knowledge of the party.
According to the Department of Public Safety (SESP), an administrative inquiry has been launched to try to determine who was responsible for the party. The responsible party may receive punishment ranging from warnings to being fired and blacklisted from working for the institution.
Before the news of his suspension, the warden said that an investigation was necessary to establish the facts. “It's an embarrassment to see pictures like these taken in a jail. There are facts that nobody can support professionally so the facts need to be established to see if there was facilitation or any willful or negligent act here at the jail,” he said.
In recent weeks, other photos embarrassing to authorities have come to light in southern Brazil. Photos of a policeman simulating sex with a cow in a public square surfaced on the internet in social networking sites. Also last week, a photo of two policemen drinking beer and chatting with scantily clad young women while on duty and in uniform were also posted on the internet. Those cases are also under investigation.
