SAO PAULO – A Sao Paulo city councilman is proposing the creation of “unisex” public restrooms for use by gays, lesbians and transvestites. The councilman, who last year proposed the creation of a Sao Paulo Heterosexual Pride Day, says the gay restrooms would be in addition to the more traditional male and female restrooms.
According to the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, under the proposed law, the third type of restroom would be required for all new and remodel construction in public places, such as shopping centers, cinemas, restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
The idea was prompted by the controversy caused by cartoonist Laerte Coutinho, a man who has been dressing as a woman for the last three years, who causes a stir every time he attempts to use the ladies room of a pizza restaurant near his home.
For the councilman, this is just unacceptable. “If any male citizen says that he feels like a woman on a given day, he can enter the ladies room. Sometimes it can even be a shameless citizen, of bad character, not even sexual. Its simply unacceptable,” he said.
The cartoonist considers the proposal as a discriminatory act. “It's a solution that is not a solution because discrimination against one is discrimination against all,” he told Folha. The proposal would need to make it out of committee and then be voted on by the full council to become law.
