| RIO DE JANEIRO – Wednesday morning, police in the Rio shantytown Jacarezinho seized 42 bags of crack cocaine emblazoned with the image of Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho. Last year, police found hundreds of bags of crack cocaine bearing a photo of British singer Amy Winehouse, in the Manguinhos shantytown, or favela.
Military Police (PM) made the discovery while performing a joint operation with the Municipal Social Welfare Agancy (SMAS) aimed at picking up addicts and arresting dealers. According to the SMAS, during the joint operation 88 people, including eight teenagers, were picked up. This was the 17th action by the city in Jacarezinho's Crackland, or Cracolandia.
According to the SMAS, after the identification process by police, all of those picked up in the action will be sent to city shelters. Those identified as addicts will receive compulsory treatment in specialized units.
In addition to SMAC and the PM, officers from the Department for the Protection of Children and Adolescents (CAPD) took part in the operation.
At the time of the Amy Winehouse discovery, police said that the use of images of celebrities was a common marketing ploy used by dealers to distinguish their products.
