| SALVADOR, Brazil – Police in Pindobaçu, 400 km (249 miles) from Salvador, are seeking the arrest of those involved in the case of the hitman who faked his target's death. Police finished investigating the case last year but they didn't submit the application for arrest warrants to prosecutors until last Friday.
The case of the Catchup Lady and the Hapless Hitman
The case made world-wide headlines last September when Carlos Roberto was hired to kill a woman. Only after he had been paid a retainer did he realize that not only did he know the intended victim but he liked her a lot. Not wanting to kill his friend, Iranildes Aguiar de Arruda, he decided to conspire with her to fake her death so he could collect the balance due for his services, which he would then split with her.
Iranildes agreed to the scam and the two concocted a plan to defraud the woman who hired him. Carlos and Iranildes went out into the bush and staged an elaborate photo showing her apparently covered in blood with a machete sticking out of her torso. In fact, the 'blood' was tomato paste and the machete was stuck in between her torso and arm.
Carlos then presented the photo to Nilza Simões, who had hired him to kill Iranildes because, she believed, she had an affair with her husband. Nilza paid Carlos the balance of the R$1,000 real (about $500 USD at the time) contract and Carlos split it with Iranildes. Carlos and Iranildes spent the next few days partying with the money they had scammed.
How Nilza caught Carlos and Iranildes in their Scam
Unfortunately for the two, Nilza saw the them dancing at a street fair three days later and became enraged to see that not only was Iranildes still alive, but she was in the company of her supposed killer. Nilza went to the police to file a complaint against Carlos. Rathern than tell police the truth, she told them that Carlos had robbed her at gunpoint.
The police seek arrest warrant against all three
When police picked up Carlos for questioning, he told them the truth – that he had been hired to commit murder but that he hadn't done it. Iranildes confirmed his story and the two were released. They picked up Nilza who also confessed. Police now want to charge Carlos and Iranildes with embezzlement and they want to charge Nilza with filing a false police report. All three face up to five years imprisonment each.
The people of the small town of Pindobaçu
Inhabitants were originally amused by the case, which took place in June 2011. After the case garnered worldwide attention, however, they became aggravated at the case which they derisively dismiss as the “Catchup Lady” killing.Read also: More Articles from Brazil Dispatch
