| CAMPO GRANDE, Brazil – Police in Dourados, 225 km (140 miles) from Campo Grande, are investigating the theft of 7,800 meters of copper wire from a stadium. The wire—almost five miles worth—was taken early Monday morning while the stadium, which is under renovation, was left guarded by only one man.

The man responsible for security at the Fredis Saldivar Stadium said that the thieves took advantage of an opening in the security schedule, which left the facility mostly unguarded between the hours of 1 am and 5 am. During those four hours, only one guard was on duty standing in front of the stadium and not making rounds.
A guard made a round of the stadium at about one o'clock in the morning and found nothing unusual and then again at six o'clock, when he discovered the theft. It appeared that the thieves used saws or cutting pliers to facilitate the theft.
The wires were removed from the light towers which illuminate the stadium. The estimated loss is R$20,000 (about $11,000 USD), according to Antonio Coca, of the Dourados Sports and Cultural Foundation (FUNCED).
Coca also said that new cables will be installed by the end of the week and the theft should not disrupt the schedule of games. The case is being investigated by the 5th Civil Police precinct.
