Addicts Bear Dealers Trademark Tattoo

Brazil News

| SALVADOR, Brazil – This week, police in southwestern Bahia reportedly are investigating the relationship between a drug dealer and many addicts who bear a similar tattoo. Police in Itapetinga, 394 km (245 miles) southwest of Salvador, say that dozens of users are all tattooed with a drug dealer's nom de guerre on their body in exchange for money and drugs, according to G1 Bahia.

The drug dealer's trademark tattoo

The design of the tattoo varies but it is always the same word that appears engraved in their flesh, the name Freudenthal. The word reportedly has a relationship to the street name of a dealer who lives in Itapetinga who, according to police, leaves his mark on the young.

“There are many marginal delinquents who we found after they have been killed, or arrested after performing robberies or burglaries in the city, who have this tattoo [Freudenthal] which the inmates tell us that they are given cash and crack to put this kind of marking,” Lieutenant Colonel Serpa told G1.

The Military Policeman

Military Policeman Agielson Lima says he has seen several youths tattooed. He said the dealers offer money and drugs to people and then force them to be indelibly marked by tattooing. “There are reports of more than 70 people. Some said they were forced due to their addiction. I just give you the drugs if you have the tattoo,” he told G1.

A user who was afraid of being identified told G1 that he too was tattooed with the name Fruedenthal in exchange for money and drugs. “He offered me R$30 reals (about $17 USD), a few rocks of crack and five grams of marijuana. So I accepted.”

The tattoo artist

The tattoo artist receives orders from the dealer to do the job well, also in exchange for money and drugs. The regional coordinator for Itapetinga police, declined to be interviewed, but said that they have been investigating the case for some time.
