| RIO DE JANEIRO – Wednesday morning, police in the Rio shantytown Jacarezinho seized 42 bags of crack cocaine emblazoned with the image of Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho. Last year, police found hundreds of bags of crack cocaine bearing a photo of British singer Amy Winehouse, in the Manguinhos shantytown, or favela.

| BRASILIA – Produced in the Amazon, often employing crude methods of refining and distribution, the crack trade in Brazil has consolidated an industry that moves U.S. $11.3 million worth of the drug daily. The Safety Committee of Congress heard testimony last week from the Federal Police indicating that Brazilians consume between 800 and 1,200 kilos of “rock” cocaine per day.

CURITIBA, Parana – A couple was arrested transporting 58 kilograms of crack cocaine in the early hours of Tuesday, near the town of Cascavel in western Parana. According to the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the drugs were hidden in the backseat of the car that was traveling towards the capital on highway BR-227.

SAO PAULO – In a central Sao Paulo neighborhood known as 'Crackland', an image of the Virgin Mary, made of plaster, white with gold adornments on a blue background, appeared on the side of an abandoned house and above an area frequented by crack cocaine addicts on the Rua Apa last month.
