Woman who jumped from 12th floor to escape fire released from hospital
GOIANIA, Goias – Muniki Dias Goulart, 25, who survived after jumping from the 12th floor of a highrise apartment building last September 29, was released from hospital today. According to firefighters, the woman and her husband jumped from their apartment to escape a fire.
The woman's parents, who also lived in the apartment, were taken to hospital with severe burns. The mother was released earlier this month, however, her father, Joao Goulart de Oliveira Castro, 49, who had burns over 44% of his body succumbed to his injuries. He died last Monday the 10th, after 13 days in the Intensive Care Unit.
Muniki's husband, Eduardo Oliveira, was the first to jump from the building and he died instantly. Muniki jumped next but she hit an awning, softening her fall. The young woman's father was initially rescued by an elderly neighbor who pulled him into her apartment through a kitchen window, but he later died. “God gave me the strength to pull him in,” said the neighbor. Muniki's mother, Katia Dias Goulart, was saved by the fire department and was discharged on October 11.
Investigators say the fire was caused by an electric grill that was left on.
