Frigate Union stops in Recife in route to Lebanon

RECIFE, Brazil - The Navy Frigate Union, which departed Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, October 6th, stopped in the Port of Recife en route to the Eastern Mediterranean where it will patrol the Lebanese coast as part of the UNIFIL peace keeping mission.

Union, which is outfitted with torpedo launchers, rockets, missiles and cannon was open for tours this weekend. The 30-year-old frigate is capable of shooting down aircraft and sinking enemy ships with its powerful missiles and torpedoes. In addition to sailors, the ship also carries combat divers and marines.

The vessel's 4.5” cannon is capable of firing 25 rounds per minute, according to the Navy. The Frigate Union can be used in air, sea and littoral warfare. The Brazilian naval vessel also carries an AH-11A Super Lynx helicopter.

The next port of call is Las Palmas in the Canary Islands and then Naples, Italy before arriving in Lebanese waters on November 14th to fulfill a 6-month commitment to the UN.
