| RECIFE, Brazil – A Dutchman was arrested at the international airport in Recife, Pernambuco, while trying to board a flight to Lisbon with cocaine. Federal Police (PF) found more than 4 kg (8.8 lbs) of pure cocaine hidden in the man’s luggage. The suspect carried a Dutch passport with the name Raimond Van Meeteren.
According to the PF, the discovery was made on Thursday night, at about 11 pm, during a routine screening of passengers embarking on international flights. As the man’s bag was passing through x-ray equipment, the machine showed the presence of an organic substance in its interior. After locating the owner of the baggage and taking him to a police inspection room, a search revealed the drug hidden in a false compartment. When opened, the bag released a strong odor characteristic of cocaine.
Under interrogation, the man admitted to purchasing the drugs in Surinam and intending to carry them to Lisbon. He was arrested and taken to Federal Police headquarters in the city for processing. He will face charges of international drug trafficking and faces, if convicted, five to fifteen years imprisonment.
