| PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil – Last week, a couple of fish farmers in southern Brazil pulled a Chinese carp weighing 40 kilos out of one of their ponds. Jair Balest, 56, and his wife, Yvonne, who farm fish in Dona Francisca, in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul state, became famous in the region after the record catch.
The pair has been farming fish since the 1990s and they pulled the giant creature from a two-hector (5 acre) pond, situated on their property. “We caught this 40 kg (88 lb) one on Thursday and on Saturday we caught a 22 kg (48.5 lb) one. There’s more in the water. Many people fish here,” said Jair to G1. According to the aqua culturist, local residents are attracted by the distinctive flavor of Chinese carp.
