| SAO PAULO – On Saturday, tens of thousands of people crowded the streets of the Asian district of Liberdade, in the center of Sao Paulo, to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
The streets were decorated in red, yellow and gold and a stage was built for presenting musical acts, dance and martial arts demonstrations. There were parades with dragon and lion puppets which attracted the attention of those visiting the event.
A fireworks display illuminated the sky for about 15 minutes on Saturday night. This was the seventh annual Chinese New Year celebration in Liberdade.
About 150,000 people are expected for the event, which runs through Sunday. The year 2012 correlates to the Chinese year 4710.
