Retiree Alvaro Gomes da Silva, 92, died in Piuma, Espirito Santo. He was hospitalized since Thursday with a heart problem. Just over an hour later, younger sister Elza da Silva Cataldo, 86, died in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, where she lived and also of natural causes.

“They were two siblings, yes. They will be buried this Saturday at 5 pm,” said Antonio. The siblings bodies will both be buried in the Zona da Mata, Minas Gerais, birthplace of the former vice president.

According to Antonio, the death of the two siblings on the same day was a coincidence. Dona Elza was never aware of the death of her older brother in Espirito Santo less than two hours earlier.

Former Vice President Jose Alencar had 14 siblings, three of whom remain living. Alencar died in March, 2011, after struggling for 14 years with cancer in the abdominal region. He served as vice president from 2003 to 2010. His body was cremated in Belo Horizonte, and his ashes interred in a chapel in the village of Itamuri.
