| FORTALEZA, Brazil – Maria da Conceicao Erundina celebrated her 110th birthday on Friday, in Brejo Santo, in southern Ceara. Known amongst friends as Dona Senhorinha, she is keen to show her birth certificate, filed on 22 January 1902.

Celebrating with cake and soda, and in the presence of family, she received a visit from a doctor with the federal health service who attested to her excellent health. “She doesn't use any daily medication. We can only observe the state of her health and her nutrition on a regular basis, ”Gislayne Gomes, MD, told G1 Network. “In short, she is in an excellent state of health for her age, she is in perfect health,” the doctor said.
At 110 years old, the retired farmer, who suffers a bit, has difficulties surviving on her retirement income, which supports her whole family. “I worked hard on the farm, after I got married. My husband died and I raised eight children alone,” she says.
Currently, only her youngest son, Antonio Nicolau, lives with her. He is unemployed but does odd jobs to augment the family income. “Just about all we have is her pension, and it is hard to live alone with her,” said the son. “We can barely pay the rent, let alone electricity and water. Not even a penny left to buy medicine,” added Maria.
