Suspect was the last person seen with the girl while she was alive
FORTALEZA, Brazil – Early Wednesday morning, police arrested a man suspected of raping and killing his sister, aged 9. Francisco Antonio Cosmo de Melo, also known as “Neguinho da Bastiana”, 26, was apprehended in the city of Itati, in the interior of the state of Ceara, 216 km from the capital, Fortaleza.
According to police, Cosmo was already wanted for theft and drug trafficking and was found armed with three guns at around 3 am. He was taken to the police station in the city of Caninde, also in the interior of the state, to be interrogated.
The body of Daniele Cosmo de Melo was found by neighbors on September 17 floating in a creek, near the rural town of Forquilha, in the northern region of Ceara. Police said that the child had been stabbed in various parts of her body and that experts determined the body showed signs of sexual violence.
The brother was the number one suspect in the crime since the day the girl disappeared because, according to the family, the girl was last seen leaving the house with him and neither had been seen since. Police did not state a motive.
