Wildlife in Metropolitan Sao Paulo not Unusual
SAO PAULO, Brazil – A resident of Jaragua, in the Northern Zone of Metropolitan Sao Paulo, found a cougar in the backyard of the family home early on Thursday. The family dog helped to contain the animal while the firemen came to the rescue.
The cougar was captured about 3 am, when firefighters arrived at the home of Wilson Marciano dos Santos. He lives in the back of the property and was alerted by one of his children.
The residents were sleeping when they heard the family dog barking. At first, they didn't believe their eyes but eventually all agreed that they saw a cougar in the yard.
“My son called out saying that there was a cougar in the yard. I didn't believe him. I got up and looked for myself and that is when I came to believe. So, I called the fire department,” he told O Globo. “I called five, six times. They were very slow to respond.”
The family was very concerned because some of the children were sleeping on the ground floor of the house, close to where the big cat was, with the windows open. The dog was barking for about an hour and had the cougar cornered in the yard. In front of the house is a fence and a gate. According to the owner, the gate was closed. The family didn't know where the cat entered.
When the firefighters arrived, they discovered that it would not be easy to capture the animal—even with tranquilizers it was difficult to get the cat into a cage. Eventually, firefighters got the cat tranquilized and into a cage. They took him to the Environmental Police squad in Horto Florestal and its fate will be decided today.
A few days ago, another cougar was found in a treetop in Franco da Rocha, Sao Paulo.
