Four men assault 60 tourists on catamaran in Tamandaré
RECIFE, Pernambuco – About 60 Brazilian and foreign tourists were robbed Wednesday evening during a catamaran outing in Tamandare, along the south coast of Pernambuco, in north-eastern Brazil. According to police, four men in a boat--stolen just before the assault--motored up to the larger tourist vessel and announced the robbery.
The men took money, purses, cameras, cell phones, wallets and even clothes. Police say the thieves stole a boat, and kidnapped the boat's captain, in order to carry out the robbery. They stopped the catamaran as it was approaching Guadalupe Beach, where a traditional clay bath is located.
After stealing the passenger's belongings, they tossed the key to the catamaran into the sea and fled on the skiff that they stole to use in the criminal action. They abandoned the skiff's captain on Carneiros Beach. Coming ashore, the criminals stole a car and fled. Police found the vehicle, a black Meriva, a short time later on an access road to Tamandare Beach.
A person who was at the Sirinhaém pier, and learned about the assault on the catamaran, called police. They called another boat to rescue the victims, who filed a police report at the station, also located in Sirinhaém. Police put up roadblocks on the roads providing access to the area of Tamandare and nearby beaches, but no suspects were found.
The tourists were staying at hotels in Port Galinhas and rented the catamaran to visit the beach of Carneiros. “It's a beautiful ride, really. This was an atypical case. I have worked here eight years and never say a crime of this nature. Since yesterday the we have been conducting searches in order to locate and arrest the assailants,” the police chief of Port Galinhos, Joaquim Braga, told the Globo network.
