Uneder investigation for racism for saying “Brazil is full of monkeys”
JOAO PESSOA, Paraiba – A Swede was taken to the local police station on Friday after causing an uproar in Jacuma Beach, on the southern coast of Paraiba. According to witnesses, the tourist said that Brazil was a land of monkeys, taunted drivers and even spit on taxi cabs. The suspect was taken to the Alhandra Police Station to give his statement, according to g1.globo.com.
The driver of a gypsy cab Cleiton Fabio Costa said the trouble started when the Swede found the price of a ride to Joao Pessoa too expensive. “When we got to the taxi zone, I asked a colleague how much I should charge for a ride to the capital and he said $5—same as taking a bus. The man was acting crazy already and my colleague said that he wouldn't take him, if he were me. The Swede got angry and started saying that Brazil was a land of monkeys,” said Cleiton.
The tourist then started making gestures imitating a monkey to taunt the drivers, spitting on cabs and dancing around. The drivers immediately went to a police post to formalize a complaint. Police picked up the tourist and took him in, along with his baggage.
G1 tried to speak with the chief of the Alhandra station for comment but he was busy taking the tourist's statement. Three witnesses were also at the police station to give their statements.
