Only top-shelf whiskey to celebrate for this gang
SALVADOR, Bahia – A group of seven armed men robbed a supermarket in the town of Santo Estevão, 90 miles from the capital, Salvador, in the early evening last Wednesday. According to information from the Civil Police, the suspects took a large sum of money and, to celebrate the success of their crime, five bottles of a famous brand of whiskey.
A police officer told G1 that the manager of the store, a branch of a nationwide chain, filed a complaint only on Thursday afternoon because they were busy conducting an inventory of the losses from the robbery. In addition to cash and whiskey, the robbers took closed-circuit video surveillance equipment used for security.
Police also said that at the time of the robbery, the store was in the process of being closed and their were no customers on site. The men, who arrived in cars and on motorcycles, carrying rifles, revolvers and daggers, overpowered the seven employees who were working at the time. The group picked up the store safe and put it into one of the cars, then they gathered 16 pouches containing cash, five bottles of expensive imported whiskey, the security equipment and then, they fled.
The manager reported that the suspects were not masked and therefore decided to destroy the system of security cameras and take the recording unit as well as video monitors. Before fleeing, the group tied up the employees and left them locked in the store.
According to police, the store doesn't have security guards. They went on to say that the brazenness with which the crime was committed was unheard of, considering that the store is in the city center. Police could not recall a similar crime in the city.
The case is being investigated by the Civil Police of Santo Estevão, who have no clues as to the identity or location of the gang. Employees are expected to give statements today, Friday.
