Update: Santa Teresa Bonde Accident

Graphic Video Taken in Aftermath of Trolley Accident

RIO DE JANEIRO – A new video posted on the internet last Friday shows people rescuing victims shortly after the Santa Teresa Trolley accident last August 27th. The graphic video, available on YouTube, shows volunteers rescuing victims from the wreckage of the derailed tram even before the arrival of rescue workers.

The images show the fear of the victims, volunteers and even authorities. Some victims appear to be dead; others appear with severe lacerations. Ambulatory victims look to be in shock. Others appear trapped in the wreckage. Five people died and 57 wounded, one of whom died in hospital days later.

In the final moments of the video, a clearly agitated Military Policeman lashes out at witnesses taking pictures and videos. Attempting to shoo them away from the scene, he uses obscenities. Reporters from O Globo, Rio's largest circulation newspaper, contacted the Military Police on Monday seeking comment on the officer's behavior. A precinct spokesman would not comment since he had not viewed the video.

On the advice of the spokesman, the reporter sent a link to the video to the Internal Affairs Division of the Military Police. Police have not commented as of the time of this report.
