Acquitted of Hiring Man to Kill Her Dad

She was on trial for hiring a hit man to murder her father

CARUARU, Pernambuco– A 44-year-old woman, in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, has been acquitted of hiring a hitman to kill her father who repeatedly raped her over thirty-five years and who impregnated her twelve times, according to court officials.

The woman, Severina Maria da Silva, had confessed to arranging a contract killing of her father when she became aware of his plans to rape one of their daughters. She said that in October of 2005 she hired a hitman to kill him so that her daughter would not have to go through what she had.

The hitman and an accomplice carried out the killing in November of that year at the victim's residence in Caruaru. Police arrested the pair right away based on fingerprint evidence left at the scene. The two men had police records and their fingerprints were on file. Interogations led police to arrest the daughter.

Although the three were tried together for the killing, the prosecutors, from the beginning, argued to the jury that the woman should not be held responsible as she had no other alternative to protect her underage daughter.

The two men were convicted of murder for hire and sentenced to 17 years each in prison. The woman was acquitted of hiring the men.

Although she had been impregnated by her father 12 times, only 5 of the pair's children survive.
