Police were acting on a tip
SAO PAULO – Police acting on a tip arrested an automobile salesman with 5.6 million reals (about 3.4 million US Dollars) in fifty real notes. The bogus banknotes were stuffed into four duffel bags inside of the Ford Fiesta he was driving.
The notes were of excellent quality and included the security thread of the type used by the central bank. “The suspicion is that the accused would either spend the bugus notes or use them in scams,” said Special Agent Francisco Solano de Santana of the Department of Investigations Organized Crime Unit.
The agency received a tip about individuals who would be carrying briefcases or bags with counterfeit money in the Gardens, or Jardins district of the City of Sao Paulo. Flavio Rodrigues Dutra, 50, was identified as the suspect as he got into the Fiesta where they found four duffel bags each stuffed with 1 million reals in 50 real notes. An additional 1.6 million reals were found in four bundles in the trunk.
The quality of the bogus cash was excellent with each note containing the security thread similar to the one used by the central bank. “The suspicion is that the accused was either going to spend the cash or use it in some kind of scam,” said Francisco Solano de Santana of the Department of Investigations, Organized Crime Unit.
The informant may be eligible for a bounty equal to 20% of the total haul—but in real money.
