Rape Charge for Assemblies of God Pastor

Also suspected of robbery

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - An Assembly of God pastor has been arrested for three counts of rape in Rio de Janeiro according to the Ministry of Public Safety. In addition to the rapes, the police have charged the suspect of robbery.

According to police reports, the preacher entered a woman's house in the Freguesia neighborhood on Governor’s Island while she slept. The priest then went to the room where she was sleeping and awakened her. He threatened her with a knife demanding money; when his demands for money were not met, he forced the woman to have sex with him.

Also according to police, the accused committed the same acts against two women living in the Bancários and Tauá neighborhoods. Police say many other rapes on the island over the last decade also bear the same modus operandi and are believed to have been committed by the man.

The prosecutor is asking any women who may have been raped or robbed by the accused and not previously reported it to police to report the crimes at the Precinct 37 Police Station so they can be investigated.

Governor's Island (Ilha do Governador, in Portuguese) is the largest island in Guanabara Bay, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It has a population of about 500,000 inhabitants, in a small area of 42 km² (16 square miles).

Rio de Janeiro's main airport, Galeão - Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport and the Galeão Air Force Base, are located on Governor's Island and occupy about a third of it, in the western and northwestern parts. A small sea inlet that once existed on the northwestern shore was landfilled to build the airport's runway 10/28, thereby increasing the island's area a little bit.

Often mentioned by cariocas (inhabitants of Rio city) simply as Ilha ("island"), Governor's Island has lots of favelas, such as Morro do Dendê, the largest one, but it also has many middle-class and even a few more affluent neighbourhoods. The island is connected to Fundão Island and to the mainland by a complex of expressway bridges.

The name means "Governor's Island", because one of the first colonial governors of Brazil built a country house there in the 16th century.
