Brazil News

| RIO DE JANEIRO – Workers on Monday hauled a 450 kg (992 lb) piano to the 710-meter (2,329 ft) peak of Corcovado mountain and placed it at the foot of the 38-meter (125 ft) tall statue of Jesus, known as Christ the Redeemer. The unprecedented move was to accommodate a late afternoon concert by pianist Alvaro Siviero, at one of the most famous tourist spots in the world.

The concert is in celebration of the World Autism Day of Awareness. This evening, the statue will be illuminated in blue, representing autism. The United Nations recognizes today to spread awareness on the developmental disability that affects tens of millions of people worldwide and according to the Secretary-General, to put an end to the discrimination many people with an autism spectrum disorder face daily.

This was the first time that a piano has been brought to the Christ statue. The instrument was brought by truck from Botafogo, in the South Zone of Rio, at about 6 am this morning and by 8 am, it was situated on the plaza at the foot of the statue. It was driven by truck up the mountain to the highest point in the parking lot and from there was taken to the base of the statue via elevator and muscle power.
