The exact number of condoms given out last year under the program was 493 million – or 2 and one half condoms for every man, woman and child in the country, Latin America’s largest and most populous. The condoms cost the government about R$34 million reals (about $19 million USD).

According to the government, Brazil buys and distributes more condoms than any other country in the world. About 90% of the condoms used in Brazil are provided by the government. The Ministry of Health distributes the condoms, with some going to states and municipalities to be handed out during fiestas and other celebrations.
