| CAMPO GRANDE, Brazil – A joint police action in Miranda, 203 km (126 mi) from Campo Grande, resulted in the largest cocaine seizure this year. Federal, highway and military police discovered over 500 kg (1,100 lbs) of pure cocaine, Thursday evening, in the cargo compartment of a truck.
According to the Federal Police (PF), three people, including a teenager, were arrested during the operation. Authorities say the drugs are estimated to weigh over one half metric ton.
The arrests and seizure took place when police discovered the drug during a routine inspection of a truck, which was traveling the BR-262 highway, at about 10 pm local time. The drug was hidden in the walls of the cargo compartment of the vehicle.
The suspects would not tell police where they were taking the contraband cargo. So far, according to the Federal Highway Police, the suspects remain silent.
This is the largest cocaine seizure made this year. In April 2011, officers of the Department of Border Operations (DOF) seized 899.6 kg (1,983 lbs) of cocaine in Ivinhema, 297 km (185 mi) from Campo Grande.
