CURITIBA, Brazil - Five men were killed in fights that occurred outside two Curitiba bars in the early hours of Saturday. Police say the crimes are unrelated.
In one case, six people were smoking in front of a bar located in the Batel area of the city when a man got out of a car and fired on the group hitting all six. No motive is known.
The shooting occurred around 4:40 am. Three people died, all younger than 20 years old. One died instantly. Rescue workers attended to the other five but two of them died at the scene from their injuries.
The other three youths who had been shot were between 15 and 18 years old. They were admitted to the Hospital Cajaru. The Homicide Division of the Curitiba Police Department is investigating the case. No one has been arrested.
In another case, at bar in the center of the city, two men died.
During a fight, two men shot at the victims. One young man died at the scene, around 2:50 am. The second victim died at the hospital this morning. The bar is less than two blocks from the police station.
According to the 1st District Police Curitiba spokesman, Monica Meister, the motivation of the crime was a misunderstanding over a bottle of alcohol. Two armed men were arrested at the scene.
Curitiba, one of of the safest cities in Brazil, is the capitol of the state of Parana and is southern Brazil's largest city and economy. According to the American magazine Reader's Digest, the city of nearly two million is the best place to live in Brazil. For four days in March of 1969, Curitiba was the capitol of Brazil.
