Police observed the animal on CCTV
SAO PAULO - A jaguar was spotted on police surveillance cameras cruising the streets of Campos do Jordao, a city of 50,000 in the Mantiqueira Mountains, about 181 km from Sao Paulo.
The images were released by authorities last week and shown on SPTV Friday. The cameras caught the large feline cruising the streets of the Capivari area, one of the busiest in the city during the day. Because of the time, between 2:08 and 3:18 AM, the street was deserted and the jaguar didn't cause any problems. He hasn't been seen since.
Asked why the police didn't do anything about the animal, the chief of police said that the animal wasn't causing any problems and they, the police, were monitoring him on camera and would have intervened if necessary.
Campos do Jordao was first settled by German, Swiss and Italian immigrants in the 19th century who were attracted by the pastoral highlands which reminded them of home. Most of the architecture in the city reflects the esthetic of the first immigrants and it is a popular tourist destination, particularly by the denizens of Sao Paulo which is several hours away by scenic highway.
Popular attractions include German and Italian food restaurants, bars and a cable car. Outdoor activities include hiking, bicycling, mountain climbing and treetop canopy climbing.
