| RIO DE JANEIRO – The trail of the woman known as the “Big Lottery Widow” will resume on Monday. Adriana Ferreira Almeida, 34, is accused involvement in the killing of her common-law husband after he won U.S. $26 million the Mega-Sena lottery in 2005.
The widow is accused of planning the murder of her husband, Renne Sena, who died in January 2007, in front of a bar near his farm. Police say that Adriana planned the murder with her best friend and lover and her lover's husband who are also on trial. According to testimony, before he was murdered Renne was going to delete Adriana from his will.
Senna won the lottery prize becoming a millionaire in 2005. The man's estate is in play in the criminal trail of his widow. A separate court denied recognition of the couple's common-law marriage status but the widow was named in the dead man's will as beneficiary to half his estate—the other half going to his daughter.
Despite that finding, the widow doesn't automatically lose her inheritance. However, if she is convicted of the most serious charge of murder, she will forfeit her half of the estate. Pending the end of the trail, the man's estate is being held by the courts.
Adriana's trial was delayed last month when her lawyer suffered a stroke. On advise of the man's medical team, the judge put the trial on hold for 40 days. The case is expected to go to the jury on Tuesday morning, November 4th.
