| SAO PAULO – President Dilma Rousseff visited former President Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva in Sao Paulo today. The meeting took place at the office of the Presidency of the Republic, located on Avenida Paulista, Friday afternoon.

Dilma arrived on the scene via helicopter at 2:45 pm and stayed until 6 pm. The president leaves tonight for Cartagena, Colombia, where she will participate in the Summit of the Americas. During the summit, she will discuss with hemispheric leaders topics such as international security, drug and arms trafficking, Cuba, as well as joint efforts for social inclusion and combatting poverty.
Former President Lula has just recovered from cancer of the larynx. At the end of last month, tests indicated that Lula has no more signs of cancer. He underwent an MRI and a laryngoscopy, both tests were negative. In a statement, the Syria-Lebanon Hospital – the premier cancer treatment center in South America – said tests were performed that showed “no visible tumor.” The medical procedures showed a little inflammation in areas subjected to radiotherapy, as expected.
Lula’s battle with Cancer
After complaining of sore throat, Lula was subjected to a series of tests on the night of October 28th last year. On the following morning, a medical bulletin was issued by Syria-Lebanon Hospital, Sao Paulo, stating that former president Lula was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in the larynx, which would initially be treated by chemotherapy.
Cancer of the larynx in the region is more common among men and the main contributing factors of the disease are smoking and alcohol consumption – both of which Lula was known for. The symptoms of the disease are: sore throat, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, feeling of a lump in the throat and shortness of breath.
