Brazil Confirms Antarctic Station Lost

| BRASILIA – The Brazilian defense minister, Celso Amorim, has confirmed the near total loss of one of Brazil's Antarctic outposts. “All the core base, which is where these facilities are concentrated, was lost,” said Amorim. “The exact degree of what happened has yet to be determined by experts, but the assessment is that actually almost everything was lost.”

Singer Pery Ribeiro Dead in Rio at 74

| RIO DE JANEIRO – Singer-songwriter Pery Ribeiro, 74, died early Friday in Rio de Janeiro after suffering a heart attack. He was the son of singer Dalva de Oliveira (1917-1972) and singer-songwriter Herivelto Martins (1912-1992).

Singer-songwriter Pery Ribeiro died at 74, in Rio de Janeiro on 24 February 2012 of a sudden and massive heart attack.

Video: Woman Shoved onto Subway Track

| BRASILIA – CCTV footage from a subway station in the Brazilian capital shows a woman pushing another off the platform and onto the rails. The 28-year-old victim was talking on a cellphone near the yellow security line when the other woman, 32, approached from behind and shoved her onto the tracks. Metro said the incident took place last Sunday.

Tourist Dies as Zip-Line Snaps in SP

| SAO PAULO – A 54-year-old tourist died on Monday afternoon in the Sao Paulo countryside when the zip-line she was riding snapped. According to police in Águas de Lindóia, the accident occurred in Monte Alegre when the woman was riding a zip-line which broke, sending her plunging to the ground as family looked on in horror.

Over 500 Kilos Pure Cocaine Seized

| CAMPO GRANDE, Brazil – A joint police action in Miranda, 203 km (126 mi) from Campo Grande, resulted in the largest cocaine seizure this year. Federal, highway and military police discovered over 500 kg (1,100 lbs) of pure cocaine, Thursday evening, in the cargo compartment of a truck.
