Yoani Denied Permission to Visit Brazil

| HAVANA – Yoani Sanchez was denied permission by the Cuban Government to visit Brazil for the premier of a film in which she is featured. At about 1:45 pm EST, she tweeted “It was no surprise. It was the 19th time I have been denied permission to come and go from my own country.”

Cuban Dissident Feels Let Down by Dilma

| HAVANA – Yoani Sanchez, Cuban dissident and blogger, said she was very “disappointed” with the attitude of the Brazilian president, Dilma Rousseff. “It was a shame, a missed opportunity,” Yoani, blogger and editor of Generation Y, told Agencia Estado in a telephone interview from Havana. “It would have been a good time for a diplomatic gesture of solidarity with the citizens, not only with the government,” said the dissident.

SP Beggars Earning More than Surgeons

| SAO PAULO – Homeless beggars who wait in line at a National Public Health System (SUS) clinic in Sao Paulo are earning more than surgeons, reports TEM TV. Even after complaints about the practice, a news crew that visited the clinic in Mirassol, in Sao Paulo, encountered no problems finding the entrepreneurs.

| FLORIANOPOLIS, Brazil – New photos of police misbehaving while on duty have gone viral on the internet in Southern Brazil. The new photos, which were published on social networking sites on Monday, show a Military Policeman (PM), in uniform and on duty, simulating sex with a cow. The photos were taken in November.

Lawyer Defends Woman Who Faked Quads

| SAO PAULO – Maria Veronica Aparecida Cesar Santos, 25, who faked a pregnancy with quadruplets, lived in a “fantasy world” according to her lawyer, Enilson Castro. The lawyer also released a photo showing the young woman absent the costume which previously made her appear to be very pregnant.

| SAO PAULO – Miss Plus Size Brazil, Barbara Monteiro, crowned on Sunday night, was hospitalized early on Monday, said Alberto Conde, the event coordinator. He told G1 that she is doing well and is expected to be discharged this afternoon. The reason for the hospitalization was not released.

Father & Son Meet in Jail after 17 Years

| SAO PAULO – After more than 17 years estranged, father and son were reunited on Saturday in the Sao Jose do Rio Preto Jail, in the state of Sao Paulo. The two were arrested in different places and for different crimes – the father for making threats and the son for robbery.
