| SAO PAULO – A sixteen year old boy is being held by police for allegedly stabbing his 65-year-old grandmother to death after she forbid him to play video games. The assault took place on Wednesday afternoon, in the Garden City neighborhood of upper middle-class Pirassununga, in the interior of Sao Paulo state.
The officer investigating the case told G1 that the boy told officers who responded to the event that he had a disagreement with his grandmother. “Because he had been held back a year and never wanted to do anything but play video games, his grandmother forbid him to play, which made him nervous,” the investigator told G1.
Also according to the officer, the young man became angry and went to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. He approached his grandmother from behind while she was watching television and stabbed her in the arms, neck and back. He then called his aunt to tell her about what he had done.
Police, responding to a call from the aunt, found violent games in the home such as Grand Theft Auto (GTA), where the main character steals vehicles and assaults people. “It’s the psychological aspect. A psychiatrist will have to consider whether the act was attributable to the game and if he knew what he was doing was wrong,” said the investigator.
The boy, who is being held in a special cell for teenagers at the police station, will answer to murder. On Thursday afternoon, the boy is scheduled to be presented to the prosecutor who will decide whether he remains in custody. In Brazil, a minor cannot be prosecuted as adult, so he is facing a maximum of 3 years of incarceration in a juvenile detention center.
