| GOIANIA, Brazil – A Military Police SWAT Team in Goiania raided an illegal casino at a restaurant, seizing seven slot machines. The raid came after a viewer complaint to TV Anhanguera, which triggered the police action. According to the man, he is addicted to this type of game and had just lost about R$3,000 reals (about $1,650 USD) to the casino.

At the time of the police raid, three players, with R$35 reals (about $20 USD) on their persons, were found playing the slot machines. Inside one of the machines police found a notebook with the accounting of the money collected on site. One of the memos indicated that the bets received on Friday amounted to R$2,800 reals (about $1,536 USD).
A gambler, who declined to be named, confessed that he came to the casino about once a week. “I come here, but just play a little. I bet about R$50 reals (about $30 USD). However, I have some friends who play much more. There is a person here who has played up to R$2,000 reals (about $1,100 USD) per day,” the gambler told G1.
According to police, the community has an important role to play in the fight against illegal gambling. “It’s very important that the community complain to the police so that we can act,” said Lt. Leonardo Bernardes of the Military Police to G1.
According to police, an expert on slot machines will examine the devices to find out if they are programmed in favor of the house or, if it is a simple game of luck. If the machines favor the house, then the severity of the crime raises from a misdemeanor to a felony.
