| SAO PAULO – During a theatrical presentation of the Passion of Christ on Good Friday night, actor Thiago Klimeck hanged himself accidentally. He was portraying the character of Judas Iscariot when he confused stage ropes with the prop rope intended for staging the scene from the Book of Matthew where Judas hangs himself.
The 27-year-old actor was unconscious for four minutes. The other actors did not immediately realize that there had been an accident, because the script called for the actor to be pretending to be dead.
The accident occurred at about 10 pm on Friday night in the town of Itarare, in the interior of Sao Paulo state, 345 km (214 mi) from the capital. Civil Police are investigating the incident but they believe that it was an accident.
Klimeck was hospitalized at the local hospital in serious condition after being rescued by the Mobile Medical Service (SAMU). He remained in the ICU until Saturday morning when he was transferred in critical condition to a hospital in the city of Sao Paulo.
