| RIO DE JANEIRO – In celebration of Earth Hour 2012, several monuments went dark in Rio on Saturday night, including the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado mountain.

The Arcos da Lapa, in the city center, Copacabana Beach and Ipanema Beach in the South Zone also went dark for a few minutes to celebrate. The action is a partnership between City Hall, the Department of Conservation and Public Utilities, with WWF-Brazil.
”Rio de Janeiro is honored to once again participate in Earth Hour. Our goal is to encourage sustainable actions and promote the appropriate use of energy,” said the Municipal Secretary for Conservation and Public Services, Carlos Roberto Osorio.
Other areas that also went dark: the Monument to World War II Soldier, in Flamengo Park, and the Church of the Rock, in the north.
The event began in 2007 as an initiative of the city of Sydney, Australia, to signal to world leaders on the need to take immediate steps to minimize the impacts of climate change. Other cities around the country also took part.
