Rare Urutau Bird Photographed Atop Pole

| CAMPO GRANDE, Brazil – An alert G1 reader in Central-West Brazil spotted a rare urutau bird, which is able to 'cloak' itself. Business manager Lucia Teixeira de Moraes, 53, of Parque Novos Estados in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul state, snapped a photo of the bird and uploaded it to G1.

Rhea Dies After Swallowing Padlock

| BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – A rhea at the Municipal Zoo of Uberlandia died Friday morning, after undergoing surgery to remove a 6 cm (2 ¼") padlock it had swallowed. The large flightless bird, resembling an ostrich but smaller, took advantage of its keeper's inattention and swallowed the lock, which was hanging on its cage.

300 Canaries Seized in Bahia Raid

| SALVADOR, Brazil – About 300 canaries were seized in the municipality of Itanhem, 550 miles from the state capital, Salvador. During the raid, which police carried out last night and into this morning, four suspects were arrested and taken to the county jail.

Man Arrested Hunting Endangered Animals

| RIO DE JANEIRO – Police arrested a man suspected of hunting wild animals and selling exotic meats to restaurants. The suspect was caught red-handed in Araruama in the Lakes Region of Rio. The case was filed by the Civil Police (PC) on Tuesday.

Macaws Caught 'Dating' in Tres Lagoas

CAMPO GRANDE, Brazil – A pair of rare macaws was photographed Monday afternoon making love on a frond of a coconut tree in Plaza Ramez Tebet, in downtown Tres Lagoas, 240 miles from the Mota Grosso do Sul state capital, Campo Grande. The photograph was posted on the G1 MS news website.
