Highway Patrol Seizes Wild Birds

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – The Federal Highway Police (PRF) on Monday seized two wild birds on an interstate bus passing through Seropédica, a municipality with a population of 75,000 in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The animals were hidden in a wooden box inside the luggage of a passenger, reported terra.com on Tuesday.

The bus which came from Penedo (RJ) and was passing through Fluminense when it was stopped for a routine search at km 207 on Highway BR-116. The man transporting the birds, 37, would not say where he bought the birds. He was assessed a fine of $5,000 plus $500 for each bird. The total, $6,000 is about $3,760 USD.

The seized birds were sent for quarantine at the Screening Center of Wild Animals (CETAS/RJ) of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA) where they will be cared for. The smuggler was taken to the local police station where he was cited and released. He will be prosecuted for crimes against the environment.

In Brazil hunting, trafficking or keeping of any wild animal is a federal offense.
