BRASILIA – Brazil's population, which reached 190.7 million people in 2010, is growing at the slowest pace on record (1.12% per year) and unevenly across the national territory with the highest rates concentrated in the North and Central West.

BRASILIA – Almost unheard of in most of Brazil, food and beverage vending machines are soon set to debut in airports across the country. Infraero, the government-owned company that runs all the airports in Brazil, inked a deal on Friday with three private companies to provide the machines in 12 of the nation's largest airports.

SALVADOR, Bahia – A school bus driver in western Bahia, is accused of putting itching powder on the seats of his bus affecting about 50 students on Friday. The driver was reportedly upset with the children over games that they played on the bus and had threatened to harm them if they didn't behave.

CURITIBA, Parana – Justice Minister Jose Eduardo Cardozo was in Sao Miguel do Iguaçu, in Western Parana, to launch the first drone aircraft into the service of the Federal Police (PF). The drones, in testing since early October, will patrol the border region of Paraguay and Argentina. Two drones were put into service this morning and will patrol the border region around the clock.

KANSAI, Japan – Police in the central region of Japan arrested a 25-year-old Brazilian woman who arrived on a flight from Sao Paulo. Officers found 13 kilos of cocaine hidden in a laptop computer that she had in her possession as she entered the country.

Suspect tried to claim the cash but couldn't say where he got it

CAMPO GRANDE, Mato Grosso do Sul – A man was arrested by agents of the Department of Border Operations (DOF) after throwing a bag with $100 thousand reals (about $56 thousand USD) in cash out the window of a car. The incident happened Tuesday afternoon on a backwoods road near the border with Paraguay in Japora, 296 miles from the state capital, reported.

Emu & 23 Chicks Crossing Hwy

CUIABA, Mato Grosso – A male emu was spotted crossing the MT-060, known as Transpantaneira Highway in the Pantanal region, with 23 chicks in tow. The animals were spotted by a crew from TV Central America, affiliated with G1, who stopped to record the scene.

Bombardier Displays Sao Paulo Monorail

| SAO PAULO – The Canadian company Bombardier unveiled a replica of the Sao Paulo Monorail which will, when opened in 2013, link Vila Prudente to Hospital Tiradentes, in the East Zone of the state capital. The model will be displayed through tomorrow at the Business Fair on Rails, held at the Expo Center North.

Owner of getaway car thought to be involved

RECIFE, Pernambuco – A man suspected of involvement in the assault on a tourist catamaran on the south coast of Pernambuco, which occurred last Wednesday, was identified by the Civil Police (PC). According to investigators he was the owner of the car that transported the four robbers after the robbery. The court issued an arrest warrant for the man.
