Iranian Diplomat Unwelcome in Brazil

Brazil News

| BRASILIA – The Brazilian government hopes that Iran officially recalls the diplomat accused of molesting girls in a country club swimming pool in the capital. If the Iranian embassy does not formalize his departure, the Foreign Ministry intends to declare him persona non grata, an extreme measure in diplomatic relations.

According to a Monday article in Folha de Sao Paulo, diplomatic sources say the government would consider “offensive” any Iranian attitude that did not include the permanent removal of the accused pedophile. For now, he has been transferred back to Iran, along with his wife and children, but he is still officially on mission in Brazil.

The diplomat, who is a counselor to the ambassador, has been in Brazil for two years. He is suspected of abusing four girls between 9 and 15 years old. According to accounts of witnesses, he touched the genitals of the girls while diving in the pool at the club. Those responsible for the children tried to attack the diplomat after being told of the abuse.

Last week, Tehran announced that the Iranian president, Ahmadinejad, will visit Brazil during a tour of Latin America later this year. The exact date of the visit was not disclosed.
