| BOA VISTA, Brazil – Heavy rain hit the northern state of Roraima on Wednesday, washing out sections of the road connecting Brazil and Venezuela. The washout occurred about 60 km (37 mi) from the state capital, Boa Vista, on the BR-174 North, completely closing the highway.

The State Civil Defense, working with the Federal Highway Police, closed the road after floods washed it out in two locations.
According to the commander of the Civil Defense, Coronel Leocádio Menezes, record flooding is taking place in the Amazon, which interferes with daily life in Roraima.
“Last week, we did a survey in Boa Vista and noted vulnerabilities on account of the rain this year. We believe that other things may break due to the fragility, but are taking preventive measures so that no tragedy happens,” the colonel told Cyneida Correia, reporting for terra.com.br.
