Romanian Mule Arrested with Cocaine

| FORTALEZA, Brazil – A 23-year-old Romanian was caught red-handed on Saturday by Federal Police (PF) carrying cocaine at the international airport in Fortaleza. The man, who was about to board a flight to Lisbon, was carrying 3.9 kg (8.6 lbs) of pure cocaine hidden in his suitcase.

A 23-year-old Romanian national was arrested at the Pinto Martins International Airport in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil boarding a flight to Lisbon and carrying a suitcase with 3.9 kg of pure cocaine hidden in a secret compartment on Saturday, 03 March 2012.

According to the PF, the arrest occurred when a routine x-ray of the man’s two bags indicated the presence of an organic substance. During a search of the bags, police found the cocaine hidden in the lining of the bags.

During an interrogation, the Romanian national said that he entered Brazil during the last week of February and received the bags in the Amazonian capital, Manaus. He said that he had no previous knowledge of the existence of cocaine hidden in the suitcases.

The suspect was charged with international drug trafficking and faces a penalty, if convicted, of 5 to 15 years imprisonment. He is currently being held at the Federal Police lockup in Ceara.
