Brazil News

| RIO DE JANEIRO – During a two-month operation that just concluded, Military Police (PM) in Rio seized over 7,000 motorcycles. According to police, the seizure is the main reason for the reduction in crime in the month of December. The motorcycles, most of them with illegal or stolen documents, were used in robberies.

A police study, shared with Good Morning Brazil, showed a significant drop in crimes committed using motorcycles. The so-called lethal violent crimes, involving firearms, fell 33.33% and the rate of armed car robberies fell 18.87%.

“In the area covering the districts of Leblon, Ipanema, Lagoa and Sao Conrado there were only two car robberies during the month of December. That is the smallest number for all of 2011. It is particularly significant because until now the number of armed car robberies using a motorcycle remained constant,” said Lt. Col. Frederico Caldas, PR for the Military Police.
