Oscar Niemeyer Hospitalized in Rio

| RIO DE JANEIRO – Iconic Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, 104, was hospitalized on Wednesday at Samaritan Hospital, in Botafogo, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. According to a spokesman for the hospital, Niemeyer was admitted at about 7 pm and his prognosis is good.

Ana Lucia Niemeyer, the architect's daughter, said that her father's health is not serious and that he was admitted to undergo treatment for dehydration as the result of the flu.

According to information from Samaritan Hospital he is not at risk. At around 11 am Thursday, Niemeyer remained hospitalized in the Intermediate Unit. A spokesman for the hospital did not know if he will undergo additional tests today.

Niemeyer is known internationally for being the designer of the main buildings of the national capital, Brasilia, and dozens of works in other cities around the world.

Just over a year ago, in April 2011, Oscar Niemeyer was hospitalized for 12 days in the same hospital due to a urinary tract infection.
